Entry Level Ageing and Disability Qualification

Course Overview

Qualified personal care workers who work across jobs in health, aged care and disability care are in high demand, with the industry set to lead Queensland’s employment growth into 2025-2026. Around 50,000 new Queensland jobs are forecast to be generated in the healthcare and individual support industry over the next 12 – 24 months.

This course is suited to those who want a career change, are re-entering the workforce or want to kick off a meaningful and rewarding career with excellent employment prospects.

This qualification reflects the role of support workers in the community and/or residential setting who follow an individualised plan to provide person-centred support to people who may require support due to ageing, disability or some other reason.

Become A Personal Care Worker

The role of a Personal Care Worker has a variety of names, such as: Support Worker, Community Care Worker, Assistant in Nursing, to name a few, but the one thing they all have in common is their duties and responsibilities are alike. Working as a Personal Care Worker, you would be expected to:

Promote the person’s independence
Treat people with respect and dignity
Support people with domestic tasks
Assist people with their personal care needs, this can include: grooming, eating, personal hygiene needs, showering and bathing

Units

Each of our programs will have their specific make-up of units of competency (please see the relevant program guide), however generally you can choose between:

As part of this qualification, you will be required to complete 15 units of competency:

9 core units and 6 elective units

CHCCCS040– Support independence and wellbeing

HLTWHS002 – Follow safe work practices for direct client care
CHCCCS038 – Facilitate the empowerment of people receiving support
HLTINF006 – Apply basic principles and practices of infection prevention and control

Funding & Fees

This course is currently funded for eligible students.

Students are required to pay a co-contribution fee.

Students eligible for subsidised training under government funding programs can normally only access the funding once, so it is important that you choose your course carefully.

Full course fees are applicable to those students who are not eligible for the government subsidised training.

We have great interest-free payment plans available, in weekly, fortnightly or monthly installments

Entry Requirements

There are no academic entry requirements for this course.

Successful applicants will need to:

Have a level of language, literacy and numeracy ability appropriate for a Certificate III course
Be able to handle physical aspects of the role
Be emotionally equipped to handle the role
Have a passion for caring for the elderly
Have a clear National Police Check
Apply for a NDIS Worker Screening Card

You might work in:

Hospitals providing assistance with education to patients for the purpose of improving their; lifestyle choices, diet, and exercise tolerance

Residential Aged Care Facilities providing competent personal care assistance under the direction of a Clinical Care Team

In-home Aged Care providing and delivering individual and personalised care and resources to clients, so that they may continue to live in their homes

Disability Services providing the best possible services and support to enhance the lives of people with disabilities and their families

Mental Health Services providing recovery oriented support to clients including in relation to social supports, links to mental health treatment, housing and employment services and a quality lifestyle in the community

Student Support

We want our students to succeed and go on to really enjoy the work they do in the industry they love, so we have put together a Student Support Program to assist in that journey.

We can provide phone support – Students can organise personal tutorial sessions over the phone. This support is flexible to the needs of the students. It can be an opportunity to seek feedback on assessment prior to submission or seek assistance with assessments.

Resume preparation – Prior to placement or completion of the course, students may access tools and resources to have a personal Resume created that is tailored towards individual support work and includes recent studies and placement experience. Resume development is achieved through face-to-face or over the phone one-on-one sessions.

Interview skills – An interview/coaching workshop is in-built into the course. This workshop provides advice and assistance to students on what to expect during job interviews.

Ongoing Support – Your journey with Equinox College does not end once you finish your course. We may be able to provide you with customised employment support, by marketing high achievers to employers who are actively recruiting.
