In a groundbreaking initiative, Equinox College has joined forces with Labour Solutions Australia and the Papua New Guinea Treasury Department’s Labour Mobility Unit in Papua New Guinea to usher in a new era of skilled care in the aged care sector. This collaboration, under the auspices of the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) Scheme, marks a significant milestone in cross-border educational and professional development.

At the heart of this initiative is the delivery of the Certificate III in Individual Support to a dedicated group of 33 Papua New Guineans. These students, comprising 30 women and 3 men, represent a diverse cross-section of the nation, hailing from regions such as Port Moresby, Lae, Rabaul, and Manus Island. Their journey to Kavieng, in the New Ireland Province, symbolises not just a physical journey but a commitment to personal and professional growth.

The National Fisheries College Campus in Kavieng, New Ireland Province has graciously opened its doors to accommodate these enthusiastic learners. The setting, known for its picturesque beauty and tranquil environment, provides an ideal backdrop for intensive learning and development.

The training regimen for these students is nothing short of rigorous. With classes six days a week, it is a testament to their unwavering dedication and tireless spirit. Zac Hitchcock, our CEO and the on-country trainer, has been particularly impressed by the group’s commitment. “From the first day, the determination and motivation of these students were palpable,” he notes. “Their innate sense of care and compassion, so deeply embedded in their culture, will be a tremendous asset to the Australian aged care sector.”

The program’s curriculum is comprehensive, covering a wide range of skills and knowledge essential for providing high-quality individual support in aged care. This includes understanding the specific needs of the elderly, developing effective communication strategies, and ensuring the highest standards of care and safety.

The participation of these students in the Certificate III in Individual Support program is more than just an educational achievement.
