Considering a change to a career in Aged Care, Disability Support, or Community Services? Often, hearing directly from people on the ground creates a clearer picture of what this might actually look like as a day-to-day profession. That’s why we sat down with Sarah, a recent Equinox College graduate, to give you the inside scoop about transitioning into these caring fields.

Q: What made you decide on a career change into care?

Sarah: Honestly, I reached a point where my old job felt empty. I wanted to do something that felt truly meaningful and where I could see the difference my work was making for others.

Q: What aspect of your Equinox course found most valuable?

Sarah: Definitely the placement. That’s where everything I had learned finally clicked into place. It built my confidence in knowing I had the skills needed to actually DO the job!

Q: Any surprises about working in care you didn’t expect?

Sarah: Yes! How close you become with clients and their families. People really open up in a way I hadn’t imagined. Seeing a positive change in someone’s life because of something you did brings amazing fulfillment.

Q: Tell us about the challenges and how you managed them

Sarah: Every day is different! Some are tougher than others. It’s all about communication and teamwork. The amazing staff at my facility created such a supportive network and that helps through any stressful moment.

Q: Advice for those hesitant about entering a care profession?

Sarah: Do it! Go in with an open heart and don’t take things personally. The rewards are worth every step it takes to get there. If you see the world through compassion, working in care will feel like coming home.
